Nick's point of view

How does Nick view Gatsby? How does this view affect the mood for the reader?

Nick's first opinion of Gatsby is that he's a rich guy who has wild parties and is very picky about some things. He doesn't realize that Gatsby is a down to earth guy until he actually meets him, and his opinion changes as he talks more and more with Gatsby. He know's that Gatsby is a local celebrity and that everyone knows him. The questions everyone, including Nick, asks is where Gatsby actually came from. The reader feels like Gatsby and his past are shrouded in mystery and from the point that Gatsby is introduced, the reader wants to know what's going on.

At the beginning, Nick views Gatsby as a wealthy man whose only desire in life is to enjoy it through luxurious parties. By leading the readers to this idea it gives a wider interest towards his true intentions that he has over Daisy. Since by Nick's descriptions a reader can see Gatsby actually turn into something different from the rumors revolving around him. Nick changes how Gatsby is and the way he sees him is as a human with hopes and dreams which only suffice on Daisy's love. This affects the mood of the reader seeing how ones actions do not directly relate to the desires they have. While Gatsby might be a bootlegger, he is viewed as a nice person to Nick and better than the "rotten crowd" (Daisy, Tom, Jordan).

Before Nick even meets Gatsby he concludes that Gatsby is a very rich man that is barely seen and always has big, extravagant parties. Even after Nick meets Gatsby he still believes him to be a very busy man with alot of work. When Nick starts talking to Gatsby and starts to get to know him he realizes what a nice man Gatsby is. He realizes that of all the rumors going around about him only some are true. Nick at some point has to pick between the rumors and Gatsby's word. After confiding in Gatsby he decides to trust him and believe him instead of the rumors. It turns out that Nick and Gatsby become good friends and try to help each other out.

At first, Nick believes Gatsby is like all the other rich people. He believes that Gatsby is an “old” rich. But later on he realizes that Gatsby worked hard to earn his wealth and he sympathizes with him due to that. Before Nick gets to really know Gatsby, he is apprehensive when he talks about him. As he gets to know Gatsby better, he becomes more respectful of him and his view makes the reader be pleasant with Gatsby.
