Gatsby's friends

Who are some of Gatsby's friends in chapter 4 and how does this develop Gatsby as a character?

In Chapter 4, the reader sees for the first time the people who Gatsby hangs around with out of his party lifestyle. As many other "new rich" Gatsby has connections with shady characters such as Wolfsheim, who carries human molars cuff buttons. As the reader notes the characters linked to Gatsby, one can see how he has achieved such immense wealth and it gives a mysterious air to Gatsby's personality, not knowing if he’s truly honest or nice as he seems to others.

In chapter four a new character is introduced. Wolfsheim, the new character, is one of Gatsby's business partners. Although the readers are not told what type of business they are in together, the character of Wolfsheim gives a notion that it's a private dishonest trade. When Nick meets Wolfsheim it changes the readers view of Gatsby's character as an honest man. The discovery of Gatsby's business gives the implication that Gatsby is actually a secretive, dishonest man that won all his possessions by deceit. After reading this chapter, through the rest of the book, Gatsby is seen more as a untrustworthy person instead of the nice guy he intends to be.

I agree with both of the comments. Wolfsheim is not a positive great person and is very mysterious. When the reader finds out about their relationship, it shows that Gatsby has many secrets that he tries so hard to be a different person. I think that Gatsby has such a mysterious past that he became so wealthy not only for Daisy but also to gain respect from people. This shows that Gatsby is an unexpected, untrustworthy person.

In chapter four, Gatsby’s friend, Wolfsheim, is introduced. We can clearly see that he is a shady character, probably dangerous and involved in illicit activities. The fact that Gatsby’s involved with Wolfsheim suggests that he isn’t all that we expected him to be. With this kind of connection, it is obvious that Gatsby did not earn his wealth in an honest way; he too is probably involved with Wolfsheim in illegal activities which is where his wealth comes from.

I disagree with Kristeena. I think Gatsby is a nice person; he may have his flaws like everyone. But we have to take in mind that everything he does is to be with Daisy once again. We have to consider that Gatsby might be sacrificing a lot of things to accomplish this, and he is willing to accept jobs like this. Gatsby has a lot of secrets because he doesn’t want to spoil his relationship with Daisy and wants her to see him as the perfect man.
