Daisy

After seeing Gatsby house what are Daisy's feelings towards him? Why does Gatsby feel the need to show her all of his clothes?

When Gatsby showed Daisy his house she was deeply impressed by what he had achieved. Since Daisy met Gatsby as a poor young man at a Camp, she didn’t ever think that he would succeed as he has now. The house, being the biggest and most extravagant in West Egg shows Daisy that Gatsby is able to make her feel secure in a way. But the reason why he showed Daisy his expensive shirts was to show her that he had really gone above from what he was, that he was willing to spend his money on her every wishes she had. The clothes in a way represented his greatness from his simple old ways that he was when he was young.

Daisy, having had the lifestyle she had throughout her life, was enchanted by all his possessions, they showed her that he could provide for her now, that he had become one of her own. But Gatsby shows her the clothes, not to get her approval, but to prove to himself that he'd reached his goal. Daisy represented everything that Gatsby wanted to be. The clothes were a symbol of that 'artificial world' that he longed to belong to. When he met her, he saw 'the youth and mystery that wealth imprisons and preserves', her 'fresh clothes' were what proved that she was 'safe and proud above the hot struggles of the poor', in other words, they were what put her above him.

Having all those clothes were a way of saying 'I made it. I am no longer among the struggling poor. I am good enough.' and that is why he felt the need to show her the clothes; not for her, but for him.

After seeing Gatsby's house, Daisy is amazed by Gatsby's achievements, and shows some kind of admiration toward him. Gatsby tries to impress her by showing her every corner of his mansion. Later, when Gatsby starts to show his shirts one by one, Daisy starts to cry. I think Gatsby felt the need to show her his clothes because before he was rich, he didn’t have enough to buy new clothes that he even had to stay with his soldier's uniform after the war.
Gatsby's motivation to show all his possessions and wealth to Daisy is just a way to show her that now she can be with him because he is not poor anymore.

Adding to what I had posted above, Daisy's feelings toward Gatsby changed. Before, Daisy couldn’t just rely in Gatsby's love to live because she needed financial support; therefore, she married Tom. However, now after seeing Gatsby's wealth, Daisy might have gotten a feeling that maybe now she can rely on Gatsby after all.

I agree and disagree with Jina A. I agree because Daisy was amazed with all the splendor of Gatsby’s new life and all of his possessions. When he shows her his clothes she does begin to cry which just shows how shallow and reliant on money she is. I disagree on the reason why Daisy married Tom, I don’t think it was so much the need for financial support as the need for the name and power money provides. Gatsby now had money and lived in luxury but where his money came from was the only thing that made Daisy hesitant. Gatsby hopes though that by showing Daisy his expensive things and popular parties she will want to stay with him, now that he has the money to make her happy.

After seeing Gatsby’s mansion, Daisy, being the person that she is, feels more drawn to Gatsby. She sees his personal success and is satisfied with how much he has grown (wealth-wise.) She now is sure that Gatsby can provide a stable and satisfying life for her. Gatsby shows her all of his clothes to indicate that he is on the same social scale as her. She starts weeping which in my opinion just proves how superficial Daisy is and how she is attracted to Gatsby’s wealth and emotionally unstable because of the magnitude of Gatsby’s success in wealth.

I agree with Clara. When Gatsby welcomed her to his house she was blown away. As Daisy saw how much Gatsby had changed, she noticed that she could leave Tom and not worry about the money issue anymore. She also knew that Gatsby would give her more things since he is in love with her. Daisy’s love for luxury is anti moral and in the end we saw that she doesn’t follow her feelings, she rather follows the money. Gatsby also knew that she could easily be lured with luxury, so he used that as a support.
