What does Nick say about people like Daisy and Tom? What does he mean by it?

To Nick people like Daisy and Tom are hypocrites. As many in the East Egg, they seem to be arrogant and quite judgmental to whom they hang around with. The people in the East Egg, who have inherited their money, don’t hang out with the people in West Egg because they are “new rich” and aren’t as sophisticated as them. Although Daisy feels close to Gatsby the way she feels about where she is doesn’t allow further connection with him, since she is East Egg while Gatsby will always remain West Egg (new rich). Also, Tom who has an affair with Myrtle gets easily angered when Daisy seems to have one herself. This shows the character Tom has a sexist hypocritical person. To Nick, the Buchanan’s and the others who are in their social group are just a “rotten crowd.”

In Nick's opinion, Daisy and Tom are simply people corrupted by money. They place money over everything, even relationships. Also, due to the feeling of superiority, people like Daisy and Tom would never relate themselves to those like Nick or Gatsby. What Nick says in the novel about these people, is, as Min Jae has stated, a "rotten crowd". Tom and Daisy only concern about money and not the people. Throughout the story, Daisy has an affair with Gatsby, but after Gatsby's death, she simply disappears with Tom, ignoring the fact that Gatsby sacrificed his life for her.

Nick who is friends with Daisy and Tom does not really seem like he likes them. Even in the begining of the book it did not seem like he really even wanted to go to the dinner he was invited to. Throughout the book, Daisy and Tom's real characters start revealing and Nick is not happy at all. Nick thinks that Daisy and Tom are selfish, hypocritical, rich married couple. This shows that they only care about themselves and that it was so easy for Daisy to leave Gatsby again.

In the last chapter, Nick says that Daisy and Tom are careless. "They smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together and let other people clean up the mess they had made..." Nick meant that they were people that took advantage of others, flaunted their money and privileges, and destroyed others people life. They were licentious, cupidity people who at end relied in their money and everything ended up on their side while others suffered the consequences.

oNick believes that people like Daisy and Tom are all the same; arrogant, self-centered, and money-obsessed. He knows that they all depend on their money and place in high society to get what they want and do what they want. In the end, Daisy and Tom probably still live a luxurious and abundant life, ignoring everything that happened on both the East and West Eggs. Tom and Daisy believe that they're redeemed of their wrong-doings because of their wealth and social standing.

At the end of the book Nick realizes that the people he has spent the past few months with are complete egocentric, selfish hypocrites. They play perfect lives and act completely happy but they aren’t. Nick says that Tom and Daisy mess tings up and then retreat into their money. They are careless people who care more about themselves then others.
