Gatsby

How is Gatsby introduced into the novel? What does this say about his character?

From Nick's point of view, Gatsby is introduced as a wealthy, lofty man who hosted massive parties every week. Nick believed Gatsby was a perfect person, who had everything he wished. I also thought Gatsby would be a complete man, but it turned out that Gatsby
attempted to look sharp to impress Daisy.

I think Fitzgerald wanted to delay the true inside of Gatsby in order to aggrandize his luxurious illusion and reveal Gatsby's true intentions.

Very good insights. However, please expand on Gatsby being a "complete man." I like that statement, but I would like you to explain it a bit more. Also, what are Gatsby's true intentions then? Does Nick believe that Gatsby is a "complete man"?

At the beginning of the novel, Gatsby is introduced by rumors. In every chapter, Gatsby is mentioned; it seems that everyone knows him. In chapter I, Nick introduces Gatsby as his very rich neighbor. Every time Nick gets to know something about Gatsby is by rumors, for example, when Catherine, Myrtle's sister, mentions that Gatsby's money comes from his uncle Kaiser Wilhelm. All these rumors make Gatsby more mysterious to Nick and the readers, until Nick finally gets to know him in person. By the way Fitzgerald introduces Gatsby, it gives the readers a hint that all the mystery and rumors about Gatsby's background means that Gatsby is hiding something.

I disagree with Kyle in that Nick believed Gatsby was a perfect person. At the beginning when Nick talks about Gatsby, it seems that Nick dislikes him. However, later in the book when Nick gets to know Gatsby, Nick starts to admire his optimisms and kindness. Although at the beginning Nick didn’t like Gatsby, his image about Gatsby changed when he found out that he doesn’t drink in his own party. Nick doesn’t think that Gatsby is a perfect man, he just admires him.

The first time you hear about Gatsby is from Nick when he says “Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn.” You immediately think of Gatsby as a bad man and then when you hear the rumors everyone says his image doesn’t get better. People think he is a shady criminal that has made so much money from a dishonest trade. Some rumors even say Gatsby killed a man. When Nick firsts meets Gatsby, Nick doesn’t the man he is speaking with is his neighbor. This shows Gatsby likes to keep a low profile no matter how popular and known his name is. Throughout the book Gatsby tells Nick about his past, he clears up the rumors but isn’t completely honest. It isn’t until the last chapters of the books that you know everything about the real Gatsby and that he isn’t like the person he appears to be.

Although the narrator provides with varied definitions to describe Mr. Gatsby, all of them are sourced from rumors. This shows that Mr. Gatsby is a mysterious man, which I think goes well with the later image of him. He has a deep and incomprehensible past, mind, and dream that couldn't be understood by others. Therefore, the rumors that shows the enigmatic character foreshadows the complex and profound character that Mr. Gatsby turns out to be.
